Canos is an Oxford-based startup developing next-generation liquid biopsy technology for early cancer detection in dogs.

What do we do?

Using proprietary epigenetic profiling from a simple blood draw, combined with an AI-driven diagnostic classifier, we are building tests that detect cancer earlier and more accurately than conventional methods, starting with the most common and often life-threatening canine cancers: lymphoma, hemangiosarcoma and osteosarcoma. Founded by a team spanning genomics, machine learning and veterinary science, Canos is driven by the belief that better diagnostics save lives, for pets and, ultimately, their owners. Our long-term vision reaches beyond veterinary medicine: because epigenetic biomarkers are biologically conserved across species, insights and technology developed in dogs can also inform earlier cancer detection in humans.

What services do we offer?

We are developing blood-based diagnostic products for veterinary clinics: a Symptom Triage test, a single-use screen helping vets quickly rule cancer in or out in dogs presenting with concerning symptoms; and a Relapse Monitoring subscription, enabling regular, non-invasive testing to catch cancer recurrence early in dogs previously diagnosed and treated. Both are built on our proprietary liquid biopsy cell-free DNA assay and AI classifier, requiring only a standard blood sample. We work directly with veterinary practices to integrate these tests into routine oncology care, and are expanding our validation studies through partner clinics across the UK.

Who can we help?

Veterinary clinics and oncology practices seeking accurate, accessible tools for early cancer detection and post-treatment monitoring in dogs. Dog owners whose pets show possible symptoms of cancer, or who have completed cancer treatment and want reassurance through regular relapse screening. We are also keen to connect with veterinary oncologists, biobanks and research partners interested in collaborating on sample collection or validation studies, as well as human oncology researchers interested in the translational potential of our epigenetic biomarker platform.

How do we support One Medicine?

Canos sits at the intersection of veterinary and human medicine. Dogs develop cancers biologically similar to human cancers, and the epigenetic biomarkers we detect are conserved across species, meaning discoveries made through our longitudinal canine cancer screening have direct translational relevance for early human cancer detection. By advancing veterinary oncology diagnostics, we are simultaneously generating evidence and technology that can accelerate human cancer research, without separate animal studies purely for human benefit. This dual-benefit model embodies One Medicine’s core principle: shared biology should mean shared medical progress, benefiting both species equally and sustainably.
