A message for World Animal Day from our CEO Joe Bailey

Hi, I’m Joe Bailey, CEO of Humanimal Trust.

I grew up on a remote farm in South Wales, surrounded by life in its purest form—wildlife, cows, goats, poultry, pigs, and of course, dogs and cats. With no children living nearby, these animals became my closest friends. I watched them, learned from them, talked to them, fed and cared for them—and yes, I loved every single one for the unique individuals they were. I celebrated their births, mourned their losses, and, as they did, learned to live fully in the moment.

From those early days I discovered something powerful: the profound interconnectedness of all life. Biologically, physiologically, behaviourally—we are far more alike than we are different. Our survival, wellbeing and happiness are deeply entwined with one another’s.

That realisation gave me a lifelong sense of responsibility. For years I served as an RSPCA Inspector, striving to prevent suffering and promote kindness, to prevent cruelty and promote compassion. While I often saw the worst of humanity, I also glimpsed the very best—the people who recognised our unique bond with animals and dedicated themselves to inspiring others. Later, as Head of Farming, Welfare and Wellbeing, I had the privilege of helping those responsible for farmed animals see how their own wellbeing was inseparable from the way they treated those in their care. We are intrinsically linked; one cannot thrive without the other.

On World Animal Day—and every day—I invite you to pause and truly see that connection. Let us not forget we are all animals. We all deserve respect, compassion and the chance to live a good life-and if we can, help others to live theirs.

This is why I champion One Medicine: so humans and animals alike can benefit from the same compassion, the same innovation, and the same thoughtful care. Every life matters. Every patient matters—whatever the species.
