Welcome to One Medicine Month

Apr 29, 2025 | 0 comments

Today marks the beginning of One Medicine Month and we’d love you to get involved!

For the very first time, throughout May, we will be celebrating all things One Medicine and unveiling lots of exciting projects we’ve been working on.

We’re asking all of you, our incredible supporters, to think about the connections between humans and animals, and reflect on how One Medicine could shape a better and more ethical future for ALL species.

We’ll be revealing our new branding and website, and sharing videos and quotes from some of our Trustees, Patrons and Committee Members, about what One Medicine means to them.

We’ll also be launching our exclusive 100 Club for corporate partners and individuals; sharing news of our upcoming research funding; and giving you a sneak preview of our new and improved professional network (coming later in the year).

And there’s more…we’ll be showcasing some of our inspirational fundraisers; bringing together professionals from across human and veterinary medicine, research and academia; and announcing the results of our Creative Awards 2025.

So don’t miss out – keep an eye on our social media channels and get involved in #OneMedicineMonth

You could…

  • Join the One Medicine movement – sign the Humanimal Trust Pledge and join the 22,000 others who are already helping to make equal and fair medical options a reality for both humans AND animals.
  • Fundraise for Humanimal Trust – we have a huge range of solo and group challenges to choose from, or why not organise your own fundraiser and get your local community involved?
  • Be among the first to learn about our latest news by signing up to receive our bi-monthly newsletter, One Medicine Matters. If you’re already signed up, why not recommend it to family, friends or work colleagues?
  • Follow us on social media, like and share our posts – you could even share a photo of yourself, with your companion animal, and explain why One Medicine is so important to you. Don’t forget to include #OneMedicineMonth and tag us in.
  • Set up a monthly donation and help us commit to long-term research projects with huge potential to save both human and animal lives.

Help us celebrate One Medicine Month – together, we can make a difference. Together, we can save lives.

Listen to a One Medicine Month message from our CEO, Joe Bailey, in the video below, and find out more about One Medicine from our Founder, Professor Noel Fitzpatrick.

What does One Medicine mean to you?

Ros Rouse, what One Medicine means to me…

It means a fairer deal for animals. It means a paradigm shift in our vision of ‘One Health’ where animals matter as much as humans, and that understanding is translated into clinical research and practice. It means we know that not doing that completely ignores the complex interactions between human and animal health and thus ‘missing out’ on the benefits for both. It means, then, that it is essential, not a luxury, especially as we prepare for the next Pandemic, or tackle the crisis of antimicrobial resistance, or consider the health impacts for all animals (including us) of anthropogenic climate change. It means maybe, just maybe, the end of ‘animal testing’ because we develop more reliable methods, such as studies of naturally occurring disease in animals. It means making the ‘new stuff’ in medicine like AI work just as much for animals as for humans, to the benefit of both, perhaps a true renaissance in joined up medicine. Before we get to that happy future place, in the meantime, it means at least (!) letting animals benefit from the drugs they suffered to produce, and making those available in an affordable way for wild as well as owned animals. It means a new, more ethical, more productive lens on how we interact with our world, bridging false divides in care for humans and care for animals. One Medicine is the answer to so many questions.

Laurie Dennard, why I signed the Humanimal Trust Pledge for One Medicine…
The reason that I became a Trustee for Humanimal Trust is that I believe in One Medicine.
I am not a doctor.
I am not a vet.
I am not even an animal rights campaigner.
I just don’t understand how it can be possible that the findings of medical research (where animals are sometimes used for testing) are not shared with the veterinary world as standard.  Simple as that.
It’s a waste of time and money and it’s ethically questionable.
In my opinion.
That’s why I signed the One Medicine Pledge.
Iva Hauptmannova, what One Medicine means to me…
“To me, One Medicine is about sharing knowledge and saving lives—but it’s also so much more than that. While I fully stand by our formal definition, I see One Medicine as something deeper: the missing piece of One Health.
It challenges the anthropocentric view of the world and recognises the value of all life, regardless of species. The survival of our planet depends not just on protecting human health, but on benefiting all species. We are all animals, part of the same natural world, and we all deserve access to the advances of science and innovation.
As is often quoted, the mark of a civilisation is how it treats those who cannot speak for themselves. One Medicine is our opportunity to live by that principle—to ensure we don’t just heal those who can afford care, but everyone who needs it, because we value all life.
I know the world is driven by economics, and innovation often follows investment. But that makes it even more important to broaden our vision. When we build systems that value all life, we open new pathways for research, collaboration, and sustainable impact.”
Karen Brooks, what One Medicine means to me…

“I am often asked what working as a volunteer means to me, and why I donate my time and energy to help Humanimal Trust meet its aims and goals. One Medicine makes perfect sense to me, finding improved and more effective ways to treat similar diseases that occur in all species can ensure a better future for all, and significantly reduce the need for animals being used for research. That is something that I feel is really worth working for, and all my time, energy and the effort that I have made, and continue to make, has been well worth it. One Medicine is the way to go, it’s our future!”
