How your monthly donations impact our work

Here’s some of what we've accomplished so far and what we can achieve in the future, thanks to your generous monthly donations:

Humanimal Trust funded PhD student,Dr Lucy Grist, who studied antibiotic resistance at the University of Surrey, and looked at bacteriophages as an alternative to antibiotics.

“Funding from Humanimal Trust, and the use of a One Medicine approach, has offered a unique perspective on the complexities associated with antimicrobial resistance in veterinary medicine and has highlighted the contrasts and parallels with human medicine. Approaching research with this outlook has been an eye-opening experience which has allowed me to develop as a researcher, all whilst contributing to an important and topical area of study.” - Dr Lucy Grist

Your support has also helped Professor Matthew Allen and his team at the University of Cambridge study the bone cancer, osteosarcoma, to find better ways to predict which patients have a higher risk of their cancer spreading. Osteosarcoma is the most common malignant bone cancer in both dogs and human adults/teenagers. It has similar molecular and clinical characteristics in both. Research progress in this area for one species therefore has real potential to help the other.

For both species, treatment options are relatively limited, and include limb surgery and chemotherapy. Researchers analysed different tumour samples from dogs with osteosarcoma, comparing molecular and genetic profiles. This type of information can help to form the basis of new methods to help vets and doctors better tailor treatment for their patients.

We do not receive government funding, so we rely entirely on voluntary donations to fund our work. Every pound counts. A gift of just £3 a month could make such a difference.

Our Regular Givers, like Jane, are a valued and committed group of supporters who have generously set up a monthly gift to Humanimal Trust.

I work for a charity, so I understand the importance of fundraising and monthly donations in particular. I am a great believer in doing my bit to help others, especially when a cause aligns with my own passions and values. It really upsets me to know that animals frequently lose their lives purely for the benefit of humans. With better awareness, education, belief of success and kindness, I believe this can be avoided, which is why I choose to support Humanimal Trust.

“Giving a monthly donation not only benefits my wellbeing, it also makes me feel that I am part of something special - making One Medicine a reality, so that all humans and animals can benefit from medical progress, without causing unnecessary suffering to animals.” - read more.
