Humanimal Trust Creative Awards 2024

Creative Awards 24 is now closed to new entries.  Please watch this space for more details.

Create a piece of visual art or written word on the theme of 'Time to Connect'

The theme of Time to Connect fits beautifully with what we are striving for at Humanimal Trust.  Humans and animals’ lives are so closely interlinked daily.   We share our homes, our lives, our struggles, world resources and we care for each other.   Sadly, we also share diseases.  What better Time to Connect than now, in Humanimal Trust’s 10th anniversary year to share the power of that connection?

In celebration of this Time to Connect, we are launching our second Creative Awards.  In this competition you can share, using your creativity, your thoughts, images and examples of that wonderful bond between us and our animals and time to connect human and animal medics so they are able to learn from each other.

At Humanimal Trust we are striving to build a bridge to create this connectivity between doctors, vets, allied professionals and researchers to work together for the benefit of all species, One Medicine.  The amazing connections between humans and other animal species (because humans are animals too!) not only show how our lives are so closely intertwined, but also the physical and emotional similarities between us should be recognised and celebrated.

Who are Humanimal Trust?

We are a charity based in the UK working towards One Medicine.  What is One Medicine, you might ask?

We want to create a world where both humans and animals have better opportunities to benefit equally from medical progress. So, information learnt in the human field is passed onto the veterinary sciences and vice versa.   We can achieve this when vets, doctors, allied professionals and researchers routinely collaborate and connect with each other to share information, resources and studies. This is medical progress for all, but not at the expense of an animal’s life. – this is One Medicine.

Can you imagine how great that would be, for us, the rest of animal kind and the world?  Medical progress would be faster for humans and animals, we could save time, lives and money.

How will entries be judged?

Your entry will be judged on how original your creation is, the relevance to the theme of Time to Connect and/or One Medicine, and the use of story writing, poetic, artistic, photographic or videographic techniques for each entry. This will decide a first and runner up place for each age group.

We do have a resources page full of ideas and more information on the theme of 'Time to Connect'.  Please have a look, at https://www.humanimaltrust.org.uk/creative-awards-information-and-resources for some inspiration.  We also have prepared some age appropriate 'Information' sheets which will explain the theme of the competition further. A little bit of information about our judges

Professor Noel Fitzpatrickis an advanced orthopaedic and neurological specialist veterinary surgeon in the UK. Noel founded Fitzpatrick Referrals, a leading veterinary referral practice in the UK, and is known to many as the Supervet from the popular Channel 4 TV show.

In May 2014 Humanimal Trust was established by Professor Fitzpatrick. As a vet he personally experienced the deep divide between human and animal medicine and saw how unfair this was. Frustrated by the lack of opportunities to share what he was learning from day to day veterinary practice, or to benefit from relevant learning from human medicine, he decided to create the platform himself.   Since those beginnings, the Trust has started to establish a powerful evidence base and to build understanding of both the principle and the potential of One Medicine.

Christopher Lloyd is a journalist, presenter, publisher, and best-selling author. He co-founded What on Earth Publishing, along with illustrator Andy Forshaw, as he wanted to try and help young people (and adults) learn in a more interconnected way and appreciate that the real world is way more amazing than anything you can make up. Chris divides his time between running the company, writing, speaking (at schools and literary festivals) and giving lectures all over the world.

Nancy Feresten is the Managing Director at What on Earth Publishing. She has spent more than 30 years developing children's nonfiction content across publishing, media, and events and is devoted to engaging young people’s natural enthusiasm for fun, surprising information and emotionally compelling true stories, which she hopes will inspire them to find out more.  Nancy lives near Washington, DC, in the USA.

Guidelines for submitting artwork

We will use your digital artwork to judge the competition, so it is important that you create a good digital copy of your artwork.   If you have access to a printer/scanner, full-colour scans often produce better results, but with care, phones and digital cameras will be able to create a quality image for you.

How to Photograph your Artwork

  1. Place your artwork on the floor or against the wall in a naturally lit room. Do not use the flash.
  2. Use your phone or digital camera to take a picture of your artwork straight-on and as close to your artwork as possible. Centre the lens of your camera or phone with the centre of the artwork.
  3. Make sure there are no shadows or glare on your artwork when you take the picture. If the image is blurry, retake the photo.
  4. Open the file on your computer to check that it is a good picture. It is straight and not at an angle, and between 3-10 MB in size. Save the image as a .jpg or .png file.
  5. If necessary, rotate the image so that it is the right way up. We recommend cropping the image to show just your artwork. Do not make any changes to the image, such as applying a filter.  Your goal is to have a photograph that resembles your original artwork as much as possible.
  6. Save the file to your computer.
  7. Rename the file “last name, first name.” Example: Jackson, Rachel.jpg.
  8. Your file is now ready to submit to the Creative Awards.
